Unlimited Choices: 7-day vs 30-day MetroCards

New Yorkers' use of unlimited MetroCards reveals clear geographical and economic patterns. In total daily ridership, 7-day MetroCards are more frequently used in lower income areas of the Bronx and Brooklyn, while 30-day cards are more common in Manhattan and in pockets of Queens and Brooklyn. • Metrocard swipe data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) counted during May 2014. Data excludes 15 commuter tranfer stations (e.g. 34th St-Penn Station). Average rides per day by type of card also from the MTA, from October 2013. Median income and poverty figures are based on the census tract the station sits within and is drawn from the 2013 5-year American Community Survey by the U.S. Census. Transit line locations courtesy of the CUNY Mapping Service at the Center For Urban Research. Subway station locations are from the NYC OpenData portal.
