The 911 Calls

On the morning of October 12, 2013, the nuns of St. Joseph Hill Convent on Staten Island placed 911 calls to report a fire, and that one of the nuns had to jump out a window. She broke three vertebrae; nobody died in the fire. Follow along as operators and dispatchers try to understand and respond to the emergency calls.

• Audio recordings are from the NYC 911 system. Other details drawn from NYC Fire Department incident history reports and 911 system event chronologies. All were submitted as evidence in a collective bargaining case between fire officers and firefighters unions and the City of New York, and were obtained via the Uniformed Fire Officers Association.
