Nearly 45,000 full-day pre-k seats will be available this fall in New York City schools and at community group facilities, with Mayor de Blasio planning to announce another 8,000 before September. But demand and availability vary greatly by neighborhood. Compare the full-day pre-k seats coming this fall to the estimated demand, as reflected in the number of 4-year-olds in each neighborhood.
NYC DOE Pre-k Directory, NYC DOE Community-Based Early Childhood Center Pre-k Directory, NYC Department of City Planning and the U.S. Census Bureau 2010 decennial data.
To determine available seats, WNYC combined full-day pre-k seats in New York City Public schools and full-day pre-k seats in community-based programs. The number of 4-year-olds was extrapolated from the 2010 census count of 1-year-olds.
