Race Calculations WNYC calculated the racial and ethnic majorities of each election district using 2010 decennial U.S. Census data for blocks and proportional fractions of blocks. Some districts were combined by the Board of Elections and are counted as one.
Puerto Rican Vote Calculation WNYC looked at census tracts where people who identify as Puerto Rican make up at least 20 percent of the total population, according to the decennial 2010 U.S. Census. We then count votes in election districts (precincts) that fall into those tracts -- acknowledging that precinct boundaries don't fit perfectly into tracts and differ between the 2012 and 2014 election. Our calculation provides a glimpse at voting in those neighborhoods, but not a precise breakdown of votes cast by Puerto Ricans.
