MillionTrees NYC: Mortality Rate

MillionTreesNYC is a citywide initiative that is expected to plant 1 million trees by 2015. If a street tree dies within the first two years of being planted, contractors are required to replace it. And die they do -- about 12.1 percent of them, according to a WNYC analysis of trees planted in Spring 2011, the only planting for which complete data are available. But mortality isn’t consistent across neighborhoods. Zoom to see where trees were planted and to learn about certain clusters of dead trees.
