At $500 Bail, Most Go to Jail

In all cases when bail is set at arraignment, 12 percent of defendants in NYC make bail and leave court. Even in cases where a judge sets a minimal bail — $500 or less — most defendants stay in jail beyond their initial court appearance.

On average, for 100 people who have bail set at $500 or less:

These people leave court.

19 make bail at arraignment.

The rest go to jail.

28 make bail later.
13 are released later on their own recognizance.
40 stay in jail until their case is decided.
